STANMORE

A welcoming community that effortlessly blends a vibrant modern feel with a strong historic character, Stanmore is one of the inner west’s most desirable neighbourhoods. Set within the administration of Marrickville council, Stanmore is conveniently placed merely 6km from the heart of the CBD. Stanmore borders Annandale and Leichhardt to the north, Enmore, Camperdown and Newtown to the east, Marrickville to the south and Petersham to the west.

 

Initially allocated as officer land grants under Governor Arthur Phillip around the turn of the 1800s, the area was christened Stanmore Estate by saddler John Jones upon purchase in 1835. Named in honour of Jones’ London birthplace, the original estate only covered the site of what is today’s prestigious Newington College. The remainder of present day Stanmore was known as Kingston, with Stanmore becoming the common name by the latter part of the 19th century.

 

With the completion of Stanmore Station in 1878 the area quickly expanded in both size and prestige in the following two decades, with a large number of current dwellings dating to this time. Light industry developed along Parramatta Road in the 1920s, with such establishments as H Small and Co chocolate makers and Starkeys Cordials. Built in 1911 and opened for business in 1937, the nationally renowned Olympia Milk Bar still occupies its original site – a reminder of a more glamourous time.

 

Divided into two shopping precincts on Parramatta Road and opposite the station, Stanmore is alive with a choice of culinary and business options that include Sixpenny restaurant, Natty’s café and Chalk on Stone home décor. Along with the famous Newington College, local schools include Stanmore Public and St Michael’s Catholic Primary School. With regular transport services and well maintained parklands, Stanmore is centrally placed in one of Sydney’s finest enclaves.
