LEICHHARDT

Known internationally as Sydney’s ‘Little Italy’ for Norton Street’s renowned Italian restaurants and café culture, Leichhardt is perhaps the inner west’s best known community. Only 5km from the CBD via the City West Link Motorway, Leichhardt is bordered by Haberfield to the west, Lilyfield to the north, Annandale to the east and Petersham, Lewisham and Stanmore to the south.

Known for its quiet leafy streets and low rise architecture, Leichhardt is a pleasant community of significant cultural interest. With the mass migration from Europe at the end of the Second World War, Leichhardt became popular with the Italian immigrants who would settle to form one of Sydney’s most beloved and identifiable communities.

With gentrification, ageing populations and rising prices, Leichhardt has become less distinctly Italian though still retains pride in its heritage. Host to the annual Italian Fiesta, Norton Street is renowned for such iconic eateries as Bar Italia and Café Sport. Built in the style of a traditional Italian village piazza, the vibrant Italian Forum at the southern end of Norton Street includes cinemas and a variety of businesses while Marion Street’s Marketplace Leichhardt is a bustling community centre.

With a light rail line that runs along the northern and western borders of the suburb, it is only minutes to the city via the City West Link or Parramatta Road. A short walk to the famed Bay Run around Iron Cove and Drummoyne Bay, Leichhardt is also known for its great public schools, 20,000 seat capacity sports oval and the modern Leichhardt Aquatic Centre. Home to many of Sydney’s creative talents, Leichhardt is a community beloved by all.
