MARRICKVILLE

Approximately 7km from the city centre and boasting a community mix of low and high density residential, light industrial and commercial areas, Marrickville is the largest of the suburbs in the Inner West.  Bordered by the meandering banks of the Cooks River to the south, Marrickville’s sheer size and diversity means that Marrickville adjoins a remarkable number of suburbs, including Earlwood, Enmore, Stanmore, Newtown, St Peters, Sydenham, Tempe, Dulwich Hill, Hurlstone Park and Petersham.  Highly regarded and prized for its proximity to the city and diverse community feel, Marrickville is extremely popular amongst the artistic and young professional demographic though retains strong links to its migrant past.

The first land grant in the area was 100 acres to William Beckwith in 1794, though others were soon to follow. The suburb is named after the 60 acre ‘Marrick Estate’ of Thomas Chalder, which centred around the intersection of modern day Victoria Road and Chapel Street. Chalder named the area after his native village ‘Marrick’ in North Yorkshire, with ‘ville’ purportedly added by a local publican when the suburb was gazetted in 1861. Marrickville merged with St Peters and Petersham in 1948 to form Marrickville Municipal Council.

With a strong Asian culinary culture, Marrickville is also known for its Sunday markets, Marrickville Metro shopping centre, Red Rattler and The Factory Theatres, pop up bars and coffee shops such as Illawarra Road’s Cornersmith Cafe. With the Cooks River Parklands, Henson Park and Marrickville Park, there is also the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, named after local girl and one of Hollywood’s most well known early silver screen actresses.

With good schools, well maintained community facilities and strong public transport links that include a centrally placed train station plus easy access to St Peters, Sydenham and Tempe stations, Marrickville has quick access to the M5 motorway and airport. With something to offer everyone, it is little wonder that Marrickville is so popular amongst visitors and residents alike.
